چکیده

Superconductivity derives its most salient features from the coherence of the associated macroscopic wave function. The related physical phenomena have now moved from exotic subjects to fundamental building blocks for quantum circuits such as qubits or single photonic modes. Here we predict that the a.c. Josephson effect-which transforms a d.c. voltage Vb into an oscillating signal cos (2eVbt/ħ)-has a mesoscopic counterpart in normal conductors. We show that when a d.c. voltage Vb is applied to an electronic interferometer, there exists a universal transient regime where the current oscillates at frequency eVb/h. This effect is not limited by a superconducting gap and could, in principle, be used to produce tunable a.c. signals in the elusive 0.1-10-THz 'terahertz gap'.

Ferromagnetic Josephson junction with precessing magnetization.

The Josephson current in a diffusive superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor junction with precessing magnetization is calculated within the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. When the junction is phase biased, a stationary current (without ac component) can flow through it despite the nonequilibrium condition. A large critical current is predicted due to a dynamically induced long r...

Josephson effect without superconductivity: realization in quantum Hall bilayers.

We show that a quantum Hall bilayer with the total filling nu = 1 should exhibit a dynamical regime similar to the flux flow in large Josephson junctions. This analogy may explain a conspicuous peak in the interlayer tunneling conductance [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5808 (2000)]. The flux flow is likely to be spatiotemporally chaotic at low-bias voltage, which will manifest itself through broadband n...

The time reversal invariant fractional Josephson effect

One of the most basic consequences of topological superconductivity is the fractional Josephson effect, which arises due to the coherent tunneling of single electrons between two superconductors, leading to an ac Josephson effect with half the usual Josephson frequency. In this paper we will review the theoretical and experimental foundations of topological superconductivity and the fractional ...

Superconductivity: The Meissner Effect, Persistent Currents and the Josephson Effects

Several phenomena associated with superconductivity are observed in three experiments carried out in a liquid helium cryostat. The transition to the superconducting state of several bulk samples of Type I and II superconductors is observed in measurements of the exclusion of magnetic field (the Meisner effect) as the temperature is gradually reduced by the flow of cold gas from boiling helium. ...
